Star Wars: The Force Awakes is about the Resistance trying to get a map to find Luke Skywalker. This is so they could use him to fight against the First Order. Who taken power after Skywalker had vanished. Throughout the film the scenes and music try to manipulate your feelings. For instance there is a scene where Poe the Resistance top fighter is flying with Finn an ex Stormtrooper where they shouting exultations while destroying some of the First Order's star trips. That scene I describe is there to lift the audience up and make them feel proud of Finn and Poe's good work. However it does not work for me as I do not feel high and proud as I do not have any vested interest in the characters in that scene. The vested interest was supposed to have work a couple of scenes earlier. This when the Storm Trooper intercept a meeting with Poe and older man talking about a map that could lead to where Luke Skywalker is. There is a shoot out and Finn (played by John Boyega) get three streaks of blood on his helmet from a dead stormtrooper's last few moments. This is an important scene in the film as this changes Finn and allow him to break out of his conditioning which we later find out was done to him when he was little. This allows him to fight for the resistance and break out Poe from First Order which is how Poe and Finn where flying to together. This was the scene that was supposed to make me care for Finn but I did not because it was too quick and felt unreal. Other scenes that tried to manipulate your feelings is the meeting of Han Solo and Leia after a long hiatus. Through that meeting you learn that they have a son called Adam who we learn got seduced to dark side, more on that later. There was a lot riding on that scene as the film tries to create friction between the two sides. The music is relied on a lot to help create scenes of enjoyment and tragedy. For example there is low melody for when you meet Rey (played by Daisy Ridley) who is a scavenger. It is a bit pompous but it helps describe Rey's solitary life. Rey is an important character in the film as she joins the resistance to find Luke Skywalker and is also a potential Jedi Knight. This was realised when she is imprisoned and interrogated by Kylo Ren (played by Adam Driver) who used to be called Adam. This happened because Kylo tried to use the force to try and reveal where Luke Skywalker is. Rey during the interrogation revealed Kylo's issues of trying to prove himself to his dead grandfather Darth Vader which got him out of the room in a tantrum. She then use her new powers to get the guard to release her and leave the room and drop the gun after a few tries. Kylo Ren who looks like a wannabe Darth Vader as his mask is just like Darth Vader but he as no reason have it. However his voice is a lot deeper with it and allows him to terrify people. To mean it is just stupid. This is just one of the many homages The Force Awakens has. Another was reuniting Han Solo and Chewbacca with the Millenium Falcon. The Millenium Falcon was first seen on the planet Jakko and was use as a garbage disposal. The fight scenes were not that good. There were times when there was fighting one person does move and you think that move would of killed the other person but it only injures them. For example when Finn is fighting against Kylo. Kylo does a slashing move at Finn and injures him in the stomach. When I was watching that scene I was thinking why did it not kill him. Only good thing about The Force Awakens was the locations like the sandy environment of planet Jakku. This is where you found Rey. Also the green pastures of planet Takodana where you find hidden in a bar's basement Luke Skywalker's lighsaber. Overall The Force Awakens spends too much time trying to manipulate your emotions and enjoyment of film with homages to the series which relies too much on music and very little on acting. |
